You have just witnessed some British humour! Fess Parker played Davy Crockett in the 1950's film of that name. He, Davy, reportedly wore a raccoon skin hat!
Raccoons are not indigenous to the UK, as far as I know, where most of our members reside, so most folks here would not have much idea of how to advise you.
You did mention a site by the name of Hawkeye, which I believe is a North American wildlife agency, leading me to presume you are resident in the North American area. A Google search brings up a rabies problem with most American raccoon species, as you rightly suspected.
As you had the creature trapped in your van, and some hours/days have passed since your post, one would hope that you already had it sorted.
If it is still there (and alive) I would put some 'Black Sabbath' on the stereo, pump up the volume and leave the tailgate open. Works every time with our cat when she slips in for an afternoon snooze.

I'm waiting for the RSPCA to come a-knocking after that confession LOL!
